| Summary: |
There are some experiences we all would prefer not to have had in our lives.
There are some experiences that are devastating and life changing, one of the most fearful experiences that causes the most dread is the amputation of a limb.
If it is the result of an accident the shock must be overwhelming, but also if it is something that is developing it can be even more terrifying.
How do people cope?
At the age of 33, Mark Dent had his right leg amputated above the knee.
The disease that invaded his body gave him little warning. Within months of the first sharp pain, he was diagnosed with bone cancer.
Periods of high dosage chemotherapy, and a bone graft, were not successful, and the amputation necessary to save Mark's life followed.
His story, told with fierce honesty, of the impact this trauma has had – on his own life and on the lives of those around him are in his book “A good day to walk”
He’s with us today on Allegro Non Troppo

| Summary: |
Over the last 20 years there has been an increasing acceptance, awareness and respect for gay and lesbian people in Australia.
Attitudes changed slowly at first but we are seeing significant changes in all areas of our culture.
So are gay and lesbian people still at risk of violence? In this show we will look at the issues faced by gay and lesbian people in regional and rural communities.
Regional centres that are close to capital cities, like Wollongong, Newcastle, Geelong, Gold Coast, Rockingham, Mandurah, have reasonably quick and easy access to Gay support service and social venues.
The people who live in more isolated areas like Townsville, Yass, Albury, Derby etc are in a different situation, they do not have a big city close by the can ‘escape’ to.
To discuss these and other issues we are Joined by Greg Adkins of the Antiviolence Project

Allegro Non Troppo - Straight acting |
| Author: |
Joy 94.9 Addam Stobbs |
| Subtitle: |
|
| Summary: |
Who tells us we are gay? So we look gay, should we try to look straight?
One of the things that has intrigued me for a long time, is the fact that people around me knew I was gay before I did. How?
Is this the social indicator of “straight acting”? Did I look Gay? Well I must have, so what constitutes looking Gay?
There are two areas where this issue is going. Firstly some Guy and some women just have that ‘gay’ look, exactly what that is will be what we hope to discover on the show today.
The second point is that some people adapt the image, and the mannerisms and become extreme characterisations of themselves, women get the overly butch or hyper feminine look, and gay guys get completely the ultra butch, or go over the top camp and effeminate.
The next stop is Drag.
So the questions we have to consider is why does this happen? Is it a bad thing?
We’ve heard some outrageous statements about straight men feeling ‘threatened’ in various ways by homosexuals, why are they threatened?
TO discuss this today we have two excellent people who’ll be able to discuss this with us: Chris Sloane and Donna Lyon

The interview looks critically at him and the attitudes that he media presence seems to represent, and to also discuss why there are 130 web pages describing him as homophobic over his comments at the 2010 winter Olympics.

Allegro non troppo - Wear it with Pride and Gay Choirs |

| Summary: |
One of the most notable aspects of humanity, is communion of singing, especially in times of significant repression. Whole genres of music are represented by this aspect, gospel; music grew out of the enslavement of African people who were forced into cruel slavery by white Americans.
Gay and Lesbian communities have faced lifetimes of similar repression although not as violent as other communities, however the coming together to sing seems to be human instinct that brings communities in crisis together.
We are going to look at choirs in Different states today to see how they fit into their communities:
The Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir (SGLC) was formed in 1991. It is one of Australia's largest non-auditioned community choirs and is recognized as one of the best. We take delight in the diversity of both our membership and the music we perform. Come and enjoy our next performance or join us and sing. It is a lot of fun!
Gay and Lesbian Singers of Western Australia. GALSWA
We are a choral group who sing in four part harmony. We are proudly part of the Gay and Lesbian community and sing at events within our community and also in wider community events. Our choir is open to anyone wishing to join.

| Summary: |
The actual history of ANZAC day is not what we are about, we are looking at the personal stories behind the issues on different levels.
This week we will look more closely at what at the experiences of Gay and lesbian people have been in the military.
Until 1992, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) retained the right to dismiss homosexuals from its ranks.
Since then it seems that although they could not discriminate against you legally they could make it intolerable for gay men and lesbians to be in the military.
There are mixed opinions on how it is now, so today on Allegro Non troppo we will ask some soldiers about this.
The deployment of Australian troops overseas is a huge issue fro our community, but what is it like for the men and women who are deployed.
Allegro Non Troppo has the HIGHEST respect for the people of the ADF who out their lives in the lines to defend out way of life and our freedom. We will NEVER forget.
Guests this week are:
Chris Warwick (Training Support Sergeant) and Michael Purdon (Signalman)
Topic/Event: ANZAC Day - Gays in Overseas Conflicts.

The consequential god |

| Summary: |
The Consequential aspects of religion.
All of us have, from time to time, had personal and social issues with religion.
For a long time Australia was solely a Christian country, but that’s changing.
Social and community attitudes to religion and Christianity are changing.
Many of us have been brought up within some religious context, and like it or not it’s part of who we are.
The concept of God, Heaven, Life after death seem to be common theme is most religions, but when you look at countries like the USA for example one can see extremes in all sorts of social religious outcomes, in a country that is basically deeply religious (and not a religious fervour based on reason) but also has 65,000 homicides per year.
In Australia it seems that people are actually turning away from religion personally, but still maintain the cultural linkage.
Why is this so? What is the concept of god, why was god invented?
To discuss his life, experiences and thoughts we are pleased to welcome father Geoffrey Terry.

Overseas Student and Racism - Academic Discussion |

| Summary: |
The relationships between Australia and our Asian Neighbours have always been fairly feisty.
One of the recurring themes directed at Australia is that we are racist.
Currently this seems to be manifest in the experiences of Indian Students in Australia, and in particular in Melbourne.
Is it really violent racism, or is it more of a coincidence that these attacks seem to happen in the lower socio-economic areas of the city, where students are often forced to live for financial reasons, and where violence and racial discrimination are more likely to occur?
Australians on the whole are not racist, we have a vibrant multi-cultural society, we have a strict laws controlling racism, vilification and discrimination.
There are some people who are racist in Australia, and this is the same in every country in the world. Is there a problem or has it been an unfortunate coincidence that there have been attacks against Indian students? Do we have a problem?
To discuss this on allegro today we have Prof. Chris Nyland.

The Way Gays Play Today…. How on-line dating has changed Gay Culture forever! |
| Author: |
Joy 94.9 - Dean Beck |
| Subtitle: |
An exclusive interview with the executives from Manhunt. |
| Summary: |
The way we interact in today’s world is very different than ten or fifteen years ago. In 1993 a UK study revealed, 2.3% of gay men found their first male sexual partner on line. Ten years later in 2003, that figure was 61.2%.
These days the average adult spends 13 hours a week of their own time on the internet – that’s time not spend in a bar. Subsequently, gay culture has been altered dramatically by the influence of on-line internet dating services that reveal, expose, titillate and fulfill; all at the click of a mouse.
Bricks and mortar Gay venues have become places to go with friends for a drink and are no longer places to meet to find date; that’s all done on-line.
Saunas and other sex on premises venues are no longer patronized like they used to be and beats are, well, almost a thing of the past.
And if you think it isn’t big business, think again. Now in over 100 countries around the World, Manhunt is the largest male-to-male gay dating service on the planet and each week 30,000 new members sign-up.
Manhunt reportedly brings in US$2.4M per month in revenue – that’s US$30M per annum, and that’s before a cent of advertising revenue is added into the bottom line.
Today we are joined by the CEO of Online Buddies (Manhunt’s parent Company) Mr. Adam Segel, their Chief Marketing Officer, Mr. Todd Sowers and their Senior Marketing Manager for the Asia/Pacific region, Mr. Michael MacDonald. And for a Gen Y perspective, James Findlay joins our discussion.

The Man Behind The Make-up |

Dean Beck presents a revealing interview with International Cabaret Star Michael Dalton and his good friend Rose Garden. |
| Summary: |
As a kid growing up in Bendigo, I used to love watching the Mike Walsh Show. Where else could you see the likes of Dame Edna and Danny La Rue on day-time television?
Back then they were called female impersonators – world class entertainers that were men frocked up as women, with captivating performances and tongues as sharp as razors.
Twenty years ago I moved to Melbourne and my first job was in a retail clothing store in Lygon St. Above the store was Melbourne’s Comedy Club – and that is where I first met one of today’s guests – he worked in the box office and occasionally, if they ever needed a few extra bums on seats, a couple of tickets would come my way.
For the next few years we became good friends and I watched him grow as a performer. Like the proverbial sponge, he soaked up every opportunity to learn from the vast array of international talent that performed at the Comedy Club – amongst them, The Amazing Jonathon, Rita Rudner, David Strassman and Julian Clary.
Three or four nights a week, I got to see our guest on stage in the Rocky Horror Show alongside Craig MacLauchlan and Red Symonds.
And night after night after night, I would go around to his place to help him transform into Maggie T – wearing a costume I had whipped up.
But bigger things lay ahead and London called.
Now 17 years on his alter ego, Dolly Diamond, has just finished playing to packed houses during Melbourne’s Midsumma Gay & Lesbian Festival.
And with standing ovations each night, he blew the audience away – myself included.
Today, I’m looking forward to getting re-acquainted with an old friend…

Dean Beck with two Men of The Church - Ron and Matt |
| Summary: |
For all gay men and lesbians, coming out is both challenging and empowering.
That light-bulb moment when an individual awakens to a sense of freedom, unrestricted by the expectations of family, free of self-imposed sabotage and doubt and present to a new truth, is the moment we are free.
The freedom enables you to be the real you – true to yourself first and foremost and from that space all else follows.
My two guests have not met until today – yet, in many ways, their lives have taken remarkably similar paths.
For the purpose of this interview and on my insistence, I will only be using their first names – it’s their stories I want you to hear, not the details of their extended families.
Ron is 46 – was married for 17 years and has 3 children.
Matt is 24 – he was adopted at a young age and grew up with siblings in a loving family.
Both my guests were devout men of the Church – Ron is a Pastor with the Baptist Church and Matt was studying to become a Minister with The Assembly of God Church.
In the last couple of years, both men have come out as being gay. Together, we will explore the challenges of their new direction in life.
These are their stories.

Dean Beck Presents - When Two Worlds Collide |

JOY 94.9 - Dean Beck |

Shawn Loftis AKA Collin O’Neal |
| Summary: |
Throughout life we create different personas for ourselves.
There’s the ‘work’ you, there’s the ‘you’ that your friends know and love.
There’s the way that you are with your Mother and Father.
You in a 10 year Marriage for instance, might be very different to the way you are as an impassioned lover.
The way we act and react to others is ultimately how they will perceive us.
Let me ask you…who are you being right NOW?
Sadly for many people, the only time these different aspects of our lives come are together is at their funeral.
For the first and last time, these networks of people we form throughout life come together as one – sometimes with disastrous consequences for those left behind.
Integrity and authenticity or as the kids say – “keeping it real” is the way to avoid much of life’s drama.
There are many reasons people lead a double life. And in some ways most of us do this unconsciously – it just kind of evolves.
Some times we do it consciously, pretending to be someone or something that we are not.
My guest today recently discovered for himself what it was like when his two worlds collided.
At 35, he leads a life many would envy. He travels Business Class around the world, he owns a global internet and wholesale distribution business and he is constantly surrounded by beautiful people doing what loves.
Whilst home and abroad, Shawn Loftis regularly files video reports for the USA based CNN iReport website (a viewer based video-news blog owned by media mogul Ted Turner).
However, as Collin O’Neal, he is one of the most popular Gay Porn actors in the world today.

Australian sex party
One of the most precious things we take for granted in Australia is our open democracy.
The Australian Political frame work consists of 28 registered political parties.
Apart from the main political parties there are a number of smaller parties, some of which use a singular platform for pluralist ideology.
Some of the lesser know Australian political parties include: The Fishing party, What women want party, and the Australian Sex Party.
Sometimes minor parties can end up holding the balance of power, so while it might be hard to take some of them seriously, it’s our democratic duty to be aware of who we are voting for. Throughout Australian political history there are times when minor parties have held the balances of power.
Fiona Patten who is contesting the seat of Higgins in Vitoria recently vacated by former federal treasurer Peter Costello, as a representative of the Australian sex party.
Today we will investigate the Australian Sex party, are they for real? Why do they exist, and what do they hope to achieve. The Australian Sex party has 2000 members. Addams Research notes
Fiona Patten is our guest today on Allegro Non Troppo.

Most of us are going to have to face Dementia or Alzheimer’s at some stage in our lives, either in ourselves or people around us.
Dementia is a general term that describes a number of different illnesses which lead to a decline in mental or cognitive function. The most well-known of the dementias is Alzheimer’s disease. Dementia is an illness which is rapidly increasing in prevalence, mostly due to the ageing of the population. In fact, the main risk factor for dementia is age. In Australia, the 2006 estimated prevalence of dementia is 1% of those aged 60-65, 6% of those aged 75-79, and 45% of those aged 95 or older (Alzheimer's Australia, 2005).
Dr Maree Farrow (BAppSc, PhD) is a Research Officer with Alzheimer’s Australia Vic. She is an experienced researcher in the field of cognitive neuroscience. Her research interests encompass neurobiological and neuropsychological aspects of brain disorders. Her research has involved studies of the developing and aging brain, as well as neurological and psychiatric disorders, using brain imaging among other measures of cognitive function.
There are some specific items we will discuss with Dr Farrow as they relate to G&L health issues.

As homosexuals we been put down for years, we’ve had people making fun of us in serious and offensive ways (Sam Newman, John Laws, Sasha Cohen –Bruno).
Gay people can though, blend in and not be noticed (Well at times), but this is not the case for Short Statured People. One can understand if they are frequently dismayed by the way they are portrayed in popular culture.
In March this year we told the story of Margherita Coppolino, a short statured lesbian who, went on a personal trek to Italy to find her birth mother.
Since then, Margherita has been on another adventure, she has been to the World Dwarf Games in Ireland, a magnificent event: where the Australian Contingent won 12 gold Medals, 9 Silver and 3 bronze, not bad medal tally for a team of only 14 Australians.
Today to talk more about their lives and the celebration that was the work dwarf games we have Margherita Coppolino, Adam Cullen.

Allegro non troppo - Dr Dennis Altman |

| Summary: |
We have some regular guests on allegro, who are great contributors to the social and political growth of homosexuals.
It’s great to have Dr Dennis Altman back this week.
Homosexual have been able to make a lot o changes to Australian society, like lobbying politicians and political parties to bring about change. There are Gay and Lesbian rights groups in every state.
Lobbying politicians and working with state and federal governments to bring about change is good.
There is another way that the G&L impacts on governments, in this case it’s local and perhaps state government, and it’s through the impact of small business (and not so small one’s).
I recall reading a study that looked at the economic impact of Mardi Gras in Sydney. At it’s peak it’s financial impact was $99 million for local business.
When I was working with Midsumma there was a report from a PhD student who researched and said that Midsumma had (I think) $29 million impact on local business.
It’s through these massive financial contributions that we see governments now courting the Gay community festivals to support local business. Looking at Victoria, we have Midsumma & Pride march in January, but the regional and rural festivals are growing, Chill out in Daylesford and Spring migration in Yackandandah.
If the G&L community decides not to hold a festival or relocate, it sets off their alarm bells.

Allegro non troppo - immigration |

| Summary: |
The majority of Australians have an immigration background. There are not many of us who do not have family histories that as one time involved immigration to Australia.
As we have seen, there are some benefits from living in Australia, our geographic isolation has had some benefits, our resource rich mining sector has buffered us from the GFC. SO it’s good to be here.
Australia has always been seen as a desirable country for relocation. Europeans, in the 1950-60’s Asian and Vietnamese in 1970-90’s and now people from Africa, and the middle east,
What sort of Australia do we live in with all of these cultures? Are we racist? Are we accepting of diverse cultures, so we exclude some cultures and discriminate?
Homosexual have always had a bit of a hard time with all forms of government red tape including immigration, we’ll see how this is now with Geoff Fitzpatrick (GLITF Convenor) and Bette Hatfield (Chairperson), from The gay and Lesbian Immigration Task Force
We’ll also discuss some of the other issues about immigration, and who the government regards as suitable and not suitable.

Allegro Non Troppo - Scots |
| Author: |

| Summary: |
Gay Scotland is actually located in Melbourne and other Australian Cities!
When we think of new and emerging communities in the Australian context, we think of African and middle eastern people relocating their lives here.
There is another wave of immigration that is taking place, that is not readily visible, but is non the less very apparent to those in the know. There are a lot of Scottish homosexuals here!
Why? What’s going on? With the British Cultural Revolution towards homosexuals so much ahead of Australia, why are we seeing all these Scots people coming down under?
There is a bit of a problem with homophobic bullying in Scottish schools, but it doesn’t seem any worse than anywhere else, so that’s not the reason, They might have come to Australia for the weather and beach, but that’s not the cause in Melbourne where there is a huge contingent of Scots ex-pats, seems like every second person on the gay scene here has a Glaswegian accent.
We’ll discover the secret behind this invasion with Hugh and Nicola on Allegro Non troppo today.
There will be no Haggis, Kilt or bagpipe jokes, I promise to Mary Mother of James.

Mental Health |
| Summary: |
Mental health week around Australia is upon us. Beyond Blue?
We all have mental health issues that touch our lives from time to time, some are fleeting, some are chronic. Frequently mental health issues are more about developing coping mechanisms and finding the cause.
Depression and low self-esteem seem to be the mental health issues that are most prevalent in the gay and lesbian community.
Most of us go through some sort of depression at some stage in life, usually as result of situations or trauma, or maybe chemical imbalance in the body. We get over it, but some people don’t get over it.
There are other disorders that effects the community, like schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder, but depression seems to be the most prevalent and gay and lesbian people and in particular youth are very susceptible to it.
Today we are going to talk to Rob Mitchell a well known campaigner on these issues and to Sam a young woman who has experienced depression.

| Summary: |
Within Australia HIV Positive Women have been described as a ‘Minority within a Minority’. In 2006 there were approximately 1500 Australian women living with HIV. In 2007 there was a 25% increase in reported cases within Australia.
HIV Positive Women are from all walks of life, with many different experiences. For women, living with HIV it can be difficult managing the pressures of everyday life, work and caring for a family.
Today with the Medical advancement HIV Positive Women have a long life to look forward to, as was not so in the early 80’s when we had little or no understanding of HIV or AIDS.
Social awareness of HIV and AIDS has improved since the 80’s, but there continues to be a social stigma attached to people living with HIV or AIDS.
HIV Positive Women, activists, advocates, educators, carers and supporters have played and continue to play vital roles in destigmatising HIV, educating with facts, and supporting women.
Today we’re talking to Anne Phelan who may be best known for her role as Myra Desmond in the long running TV show Prisoner.

Presented By Tim Newtone & Matt Kelly |
| Summary: |
It's hard to contemplate the world today without the internet. Clearly, we survived without it 20 years ago but our lives today are pretty much nailed to the availability of the internet. Emails make the business world go around. Social networking keeps us in touch. Wikipedia gives us answers. Just about any piece of music we could ever want is a mere click away. All in the blink of an eye.
But the internet also gives us instant porn and LOTS of it. Indeed the proliforation and development of the internet grew on the back of an insatiable demand for pornography... of all tastes. Gone are the scratchy VHS tapes and even the DVD is on its way out..... So.... has pornography inadvertently made the world a better place by giving the internet a pony ride into homes and businesses around the world? Who consumes pornography as we wrap up the first decade of the 21st century.
As we unravel the shrink-wrap off the world of pornography we might be surprised by the answers. To help us strip away the tales and titilation about the world of pornography we have invited into the Allegro Non Troppo studio a man who makes his living getting us all hot under the collar and a little moist around the loins. Welcome to Dean Beck the marketing director of CalVista, Australia. |

Allegro Non Troppo - Drag Nanas |
| Author: |
Joy 94.9 Addam Stobbs |
| Subtitle: |
|
| Summary: |
The Drag Nanna’s of Melbourne
If you open any gay and lesbian magazine, commercial or community, you will see two basic images throughout, Buffed men in underpants, and drag queens.
Australia has some famous media drag icon’s, but what is this fascination with dressing up in completely a over-exaggerated manner as women and pounseing around a stage?
What becomes of drag queens, who have been living like this for years? When they start to get older what do they turn into? Pop culture images would have us think they drink gin and take pills, and end up like Lola from the Copacabana.
The older Drag queens should have an amazing story to tell, what their lives are like, what their relationships are like, with friends families and partners, and how much has their drag identify defined who they are, and has it consumed their lives?
Do they see themselves as transgendered, or are they still men who dress up as women? One could partially understand the folly of youth wanting to do something outrageous, but the drag persona’s we are going to talk to today are far removed from folly or youth.
Kaye Sera has been a cabaret artist, Media Personality in Radio TV and print, and has also presented amazing live shows, to high local acclaim.
Stella Constellation has quite a reputation, fronting mega-events in Melbourne’s Federation Square, and also doing daring drag acts spilling out onto the street and onto passing trams in commercial road at Virgin Mary’s night club, just before it was fire bombed.
We’ll hear their stories and more today on Allegro Non Troppo.

| Summary: |
In this edition of Allegro Non troppo we are going to look at the second most affluent, extravagant and decadent perversions of culture.
Theatre is the most depraved expression of a stagnant and degenerate society that has too much time and not enough social impetus to develop social constructs.
Theatre is the exaggerated representation of social extremes that epitomises society.
The other thing about theatre is it’s a wonderful celebration of humanity, and it reaches out as entertainment to express the human condition.
Will Conyers theatre veteran and host of a very popular “Broadway at Bedtime” theatre show on Gay and Lesbian station 3JOY in Vitoria will join us for this discussion.

Leather |
| Summary: |
There are extremes and fringe cultures in all communities, and the Gay and Lesbian Community is no different. There are many alternative and fringe dwellers in this community, from drag to leather.
It’s a difficult issue to address, because it’s highly sexual orientated, and to some the imagery can be dark, and quite confronting.
Leather, sadomasochism, bondage and even more severe aspects make this culture an expression of extremes.
Beware this discussion is not for the feint hearted.
Our exploration of this culture will be with Leather Devotee Dean Beck.

Allegro Non Troppo - Gay Generation Gap |
| Author: |
JOY 94.9 |
| Subtitle: |
I'd rather be dead than 50! |
| Summary: |
The most important thing a society, culture and/or a community can do is to invest in the future. So we would think. Every generation seems to think that the young people coming into the world have got it easy.
Looking at how our grandparents lived gives us a clear indication of where we have been and where we are going. Each aging generation thinks that the emerging generations have got it good, and that they are being handed everything on plate which ungratefully take for granted.
Do we take what we have for granted? Yes we do. So why shouldn’t every new generation have the same outlook?
How many TV’s do you have in your house? how many cars? How many computers, telephone and how many time a year do you fly interstate or overseas? Now compare that to your grandparents.
Older homosexuals had it tough (or so we thought), and the new generations are growing up in a wonderfully accepting and tolerant society and world.
In Iran, it’s been widely reported that teenage homosexuals have been executed recently.
What do the generations X & Y think? And what do older Gay and lesbian think about them?
To find out on Allegro we have Sangita & Peter representing the older Homosexuals, and Virginia and Petro representing the younger homosexuals, and together we’ll look at these issues today.

Allegro Non Troppo - Sex Workers |

| Summary: |
SEX WORKER RIGHTS:
Every day, all over the world women and children are forced into prostitution. Their fight for freedom is being fought by advocates, human rights organisations and community groups. But what if Prostitution is a chosen profession? What are the legal, social and health implications? Sex worker's rights advocates argue that sex workers should have the same basic human and labour rights as other working people.
A sex worker by definition is a person paid to sexually gratify or arouse a customer. Sex workers may or may not be able to be pigeon holed into any particular sexuality boxes.
Within Australia and the world there are many types of sex workers – Prostitutes escorts, dominatrix, pornography models, Phone or web cam workers as well as peep show workers.
The activities of sex workers can depend on the laws of the country or State. Through the implementation of laws sex workers activities are regulated, controlled, tolerated, or prohibited.
In most countries, even those where sex work is legal, sex workers are stigmatized and marginalized, which can prevent them from seeking legal redress for discrimination.
A sex worker may encounter racial discrimination, non payment from a client assault or rape. A lesbian sex worker may be further stigmatized and marginalized by both their choice of profession and their sexual identity.
Today in the studio we have Christian who is the National Representative of Male Sex Workers through Scarlet Alliance and a Member of Vixen

Allegro Non Troppo - Relationships - counsellors |

realtionships discussed by psycologists & counsellors |
| Summary: |
The complexity of human behaviour is probably the thing that confounds our lives the most. Sexuality as we have discovered over previous Allegro Non Troppo shows, is possibly the most complex as no two people share a completely common sexuality. Similarly relationships are just as complex and ‘individual’ in their articulation and existence. Most of us have been through various relationships, from short infatuations to long term for-ever relationships.
Let’s look at some of the realities of relationships though, Gay marriage is in the news, although we are not going to discuss that today, is the monogamous marriage scenario the best model for a happy life? (e.g. forsaking all others?). Relationships are widely regarded as one to one relationships, but there are other combinations that seem to be far more ‘acceptable’ than in the past.
What are the elements of good relationships? It is likely that during our discussions today we will find that change is a necessary element, what are the changes? When do they occur?
Is it psychologically OK to have a series of short term relationships? What about virtual (On-line-based) and long distance relationships? How do they stack up?

Frank discussions about death & Dying |
| Summary: |
In the past on Allegro Non Troppo, when we have done a show on this theme we have advised the listener who is terminally ill, or is about to or has had someone close to them die, they might be better not to listen. Death is a difficult subject because we make it difficult. Everyone listening to this show today is going to die, eventually. Some soon.
There are two types of death situations we’ll talk about encroaching death from disease or deterioration, and death by sudden trauma.
The idea about how we approach death are as important as how we approach life, the evolution in thinking about this process has come a long way.
Some of the ideas we are going to discuss in this show may be distressing, but it actually might be a good idea to listen, it may help you confront and indentify your own issues.
There are some radical new thoughts about the and the immediate post death position for family and partners.
Joining us today on Allegro non troppo to discuss these issues are:
Trish Ayres (Grief & Bereavement Counsellor) &

Allegro Non Troppo - Like a Virgin |

Joy 94.9 Addam Stobbs |

Leslie Cannold |
| Summary: |
This Allegro Non Troppo is a special show about first sexual experiences, and looking to see if they shape the rest of your life. Most cultures hold the first sexual experiences as one of the greatest moments in a person’s life.
The rite of passage into the all-knowing bliss of sexuality. Is it? Should it be so? if it isn’t what are the consequences?
If your first time is awful does that set the tone for the rest of your life? we all know some people who think that their lives are stuffed because their first sexual experience was:
a) Traumatic
b) Vile
c) Disgusting
d) Boring
e) A debasement of human morality
If it was a wonderful experience, what are the transfer effects?
a) you love life
b) you fell in love with your first partner
c) you now know what beauty is
d) you know what “a beauty” is
Was your first time a passage to a new existence or was it just a bit of fun? If it was just a bit of fun, is that ok?
Some people have more than one first sexual experience, they have sex with people of different genders as well as the same.
Does any one actually plan their first sexual experience? Is it accidental or serendipitous? What happens if it’s awful?
Now here is the real curly question, have you ever been someone else first?
Who was your first? How did happen?
Did it live up to expectations?
If you know you are going to be someone first, what would do? Is it a huge responsibility?
What happens to people who live heterosexual lives for a long time and then discover they desire same sex experiences? Do they burst with excitement?
What about people who have accidental same sex experiences?

Why is sport so evil? |
| Summary: |
Ethical Considerations in Sport, Society and Culture. "Sport is part of the Australian way of life" but doesn’t every culture claim this to be so? If so then sport is an integral part of all communities, cultures and national identities.
The question this week is: is sport actually that important to cultural development? Looking at the recent issues that face sport, it’s hard to understand why it is so important. Massive issues of sexual impropriety, The Rugby league sex scandal, The stripper in the football club, the supposed cruelty of Horse Jumps racing, the list goes on.
It is universally accepted that sport is part of the process to healthy living for humans, it represents exercise etc. However the competitive nature can turn sport from healthy recreation into the most cold blooded cruelty and barbarianism.
Today we will discuss the issues of sport with Rob Mitchell from the RJM trust

The process of coming out is unique to homosexuals and Lesbians. There is really no other part of society that has to deal with this issue with the magnitude of self acceptance and disclosure that homosexual’s face. There are a lot of excellent support mechanisms available for people who are gay or lesbian. Support and counselling is abundant, information is easily available. This is not the case for families though, there are organisations like Pflag that connects the community in after shock, but often their support is only sought well after the event. What is it really like for the families of people who come out as gay? Today we are going to find out in particular what it is like for the Wives and children. |

Now 85 he recounts the stories of World War two vividly, and as his generation are dying, it’s good that we can hear their stories, and understand were we as a country have been. Most of us will never know what it is like to be in a state of war. Most of us will never have to face the consequences of military conflict. Apart from the obvious tragedy of warfare, there are a lot of very painful psychological factors that must effect the solders’ who are deployed into a war theatre.
Dr Holmes shares his story with us and the consequential outcomes. There are some comments in this story that may be seen as racist, We have decided to leave them in as this illustrates the impact and lingering consequences of war.

Federal Law Reform |
| Summary: |
Corey Irlam, Spokesperson for the Australian Coalition for equality, was one of the key people who lobbied politicians around the county for federal law reforms for same sex attracted people.
This has come to fruition and there are a raft of law reforms that acknowledge equal rights. All through the process the community strongly supported these changes.
Now that they have gone through, it appears that some people getting welfare payments may loose part of their income. Equal means equal, and people in same sex relationships will be assessed now under exactly the same criteria as people in heterosexual relationships.

Allegro Non Troppo - Married or not? |
| Author: |
JOY 94.9 |
| Subtitle: |
Who wants to get married anyway? |
| Summary: |
Whether we want it or not it looks like the western world is moving towards the acceptance of gay relationships as equal to marriage.
There has been careful use of language to not use the term ‘marriage’. Civil unions, registered relationships are starting to pop up around the world as viable options.
In the USA the notorious proposition 8 has indicated that the USA is not ready to recognise same sex unions, according to the outcome of the plebiscite conducted with the US elections
On Allegro today we are going to look at what actually is a marriage and do we want it. Marriage of some form exists in most cultures, in western society Christianity has created marriage as a sanctity that exists between a man and a woman only and that’s where the problem for gay unions lies.
Do we want to be married, we’ve never had the option, so why would we?
Outspoken writer and academic John Heard will join us for this debate, and Stephen Smith the con Convener of VGLRL

Allegro Non Troppo - Wrap 2008 |

Political Burn Out for Socail Changes |
| Summary: |
2008 Wrap
Leading up to the resumption of business for state and federal parliaments, Addam and Peter talk to two people who were instrumental in brining important social issues into parliament, Neal Frances From “Dying with Dignity” and Leslie Cannold a pro-choice advocate for Abortion. The issue that comes out in this show is that Members of governments have a huge responsibility to bring change with thoughtful consideration. The huge number of very deep issues that have been debated in the Victorian State Parliament may lead to “Social Fatigue”. This may explain why the wind went out of the sails for the Dying with Dignity Bill, it came on the heels of the Abortion Bill, and the Assisted Reproduction Bill, all issues which brought a lot of community angst. Allegro will interview some politicians in 2009 to explore this situation.

Allegro Non Troppo - Married |
| Author: |
JOY 94.9 |
| Subtitle: |
married |
| Summary: |
Homosexual men in Australia are not worthy of marriage according to the bi-partisan approach to this issue by the Government and opposition coalition (and some minor parties). Yet married they frequently are, in all but title. Mac & Geoff have been together for 60 years, and it is with the greatest reverence that Allegro non Troppo asks them their stories. Andrew and Donnie eloped to Canada to get married.
This is a good starting point to look at the issue of Gay Marriage. Married, registered relationship, or civil union – the love that two people share regardless of gender or sexuality, is the foundation of family.

I expected him to be up-himself and a look down his nose at me, but he was charming and eloquent, just like me. Go Dennis! He brings to our show a wealth of understanding and clear thinking and an analysis of the world for gay Australians. |
