The book won prizes across the world and has inspired classic films, plays, and even a Finnish tabletop role-playing game. Nell Greco was joined by a video installation artist whose dark and impressive new show has also used Roadside Picnic as its starting point. |

The rhythm, the sense of people moving and loving the movement of their bodies, and dancing in this seductive moment. You want to be there.
Well the dancers were from Sydney's Bangarra Dance Theatre, and the moment was choreographed Stephen Page, he's won a couple of Australian Dance and Helpmann Awards and he joined Matt Levinson in the studio to discuss his work. |

Down at the beach shapes start washing onto the shore like whales beaching, slowly at first and then more quickly, until the small beach is covered and crowded with these log-like things - revealed, when looking closely, to be the bloated corpses of shipwreck victims - piles of their bodies lining the shore. That is the terrifying image that opens Glenys Osborne's first novel, Come Inside. And it's in the running for the 2010 Commonwealth Writers Prize. Matt Levinson spoke to Glenys Osborne on Canvas. |

DAPPLED CITIES – Birds
Fresh from the stage of The Save FBi fundraiser shows we have an unreleased Dappled Cities song called Birds. A tribute to influential krautrock band Neu who featured 2 original members of Kraftwerk in the 1970’s. A recent compilation called Brand Neu featured tracks from LCD Soundsystem, Foals, Fujiya and Miyagi, Cornelius and even Oasis, alongside some other great contemporary bands who all cite Neu as an influence. If you want a history lesson from a band that sounds as good today as when they started, check out Neu’s back catalogue. This track from Dappled Cities didn’t end up on the CD, but is well worth a listen. Dappled cities have just dropped album number three called Zounds which they recorded between 4 studios in Sydney and New York, the album was co produced with Chris Coady who has previously engineered TV on the Radio’s hit album “Dear Science” along side many others. Dappled Cities are really busy launching the album, on the road with Philadelphia Grand Jury. Here is Dappled Cities with their tribute to Neu a track titled Birds.
Old Men of Moss Mountain – Cabin Fever
That was 5 lads from Sydney, that have been experimenting with the bizarre side of hip- hop for the past 5 years, they are called Old Men Of Moss Mountain and they recently released the Swamp EP, which is now available for download for free on their myspace page. In 2009 they are putting their production hat on and working on their Debut album to be released later this year. The guys are currently in rehearsals putting together a live show. That was Old Men of Moss Mountain and their song Cabin Fever from the Swamp EP.
The Black Ryder - Burn and Fade
The Black Ryder is a duo comprising Aimee and Scott, two former members of The Morning After Girls in their brand new project. Burn & Fade is the first taste of what’s to come from their debut album ‘Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride’. The track is not for sale and is only available through free download here on the Beforecast. The band are headlining their own shows in Sydney & Melbourne and are doing some support for like minded US bands the Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Warlocks. Black Ryder’s album is out October 2009 but here is their new song Burn and Fade.
Le Kingste – The Way The World Turns
That was Le Kingste made up of 3 brothers Paul, Caleb, and Arthur along side one honorary brother Jack. Originally from Tamworth, they then moved to Newcastle and now firmly based in Sydney. They’re currently unsigned and have independently released their debut self titled e.p.
In 2009 they also won the NSW Garage 2 V band competition, which saw them win a spot opening at the V Festival. Le Kingste are currently writing material for their debut album which is being recorded later this year and is due for release early in 2010. Album is tentatively title 'Deep Sea Diver' but that is a bit of and exclusive for you on the Beforecast. More to come from Le Kingste and their debut album in 2010, but until then that was “The Way The World Turns” brand new single from those boys.
Belles Will Ring/ Cloud Control - Al & Liam (Live medley) EXCLUSIVE
And the final offering for this month’s Beforecast is an exclusive live recording from the Fbi studios. A medley from Liam Judson from Belles Will Ring and Alastair Wright from Cloud control. An exclusive live performance that we captured here at FBi in the lead up to the very successful and special FBi fundraiser hosted by Ivy League records, called A League of Their Own. Ivy League records and all their artists getting together to play a gig at the Gaelic Club to help raise some money for FBi it was a fantastic night and in the lead up we had these guys on air playing this song. Both bands are planning on spending the rest of 2009 getting busy writing new material for new albums both due in 2010. From Liam of Belles Will Ring and Alastair of Cloud Control here is an FBi exclusive live medley.

FOURPLAY STRING QUARTET - Everything Was Going Fine
To kick us off a Sydney band that tries very hard and succeeds to defy categorisation. The Fourplay String Quartet started life in late 2006 as a classical string outfit, originally made up of friends from the Australian Youth Orchestra. They are as much a band as they are a string quartet and constantly blur the boundaries between styles and genres while maintaining their own original and true sound. They decided to record 3 separate shows at Canberra’s intimate Street Theatre, the result is the hotly anticipated album “Fourthcoming”, its available now, you can catch them at the Basement here in Sydney at the end of July / early August, this is their tune “Everything Was Going Fine”.
BIRD AUTOMATIC – About The Money
That was 5 lads from Sydney called Bird Automatic, with the first single from their second EP, called “Not Morning People” and the track we listened to is “About The Money”. Their plans for the rest of 2009 are to play as many shows as possible and write an album, which they plan to record over the summer of 2009/2010, that was Bird Automatic and their song, “About The Money”.

Up nest is a Sydney producer who picked up sticks and now bases himself in Jakarta, Indonesia, he is called Unkle Ho and he is a founding member of the hip hop act The Herd. He is predominantly a producer of electronic beats, those who have enjoyed the sounds of Unkle Ho’s previous albums like “Roads To Roma” and ¬“Circus Maximus” will not need much convincing to check this one out. Unkle Ho’s brand new EP is called “Subterranea” its out now and from it, this is “Kindergarten”.
WINTER PEOPLE – My Town
That was a very new band from Sydney called Winter People, there are 6 of them all together and they describe their sound as post rock folk. Born from the tradition of distorted pedals and amplifiers, their debut EP “Dog Years” has been receiving positive reviews from their fans around the Sydney scene. The EP is downloadable entirely for free, the track that you just heard and more at winterpeople.com.au . In 2009 Winter People are going to be recording a follow up to this their debut EP and will be coming to a venue near you, an act to keep an eye out for on the live scene and in terms of recorded music. RECTIFIERS – Blackbird (Faux Pas Remix)
Last cab off the beforecast rank is a track called Blackbird by Melbourne band the Rectifiers, its been reinterpreted and remixed by a Melbourne artist that we like very much here on FBi, he is called Faux Pas. Tim Shiel is the brain behind Faux Pas, he delivers another sprawling technicolour soundscape from his modest home studio in Melbourne. Fans of Faux Pas can download his Waterfalls EP for free from his website iamfauxpas.com . Intended to be a thankyou from to those who are patiently waiting for the follow up to his excellent 2006 album “Entropy Begins At Home”. From the Rectifiers album “Playtime for John Mountain” this is the Faux Pas remix of “Blackbird”.
