Summary: As the new year has rung in, how much talk have you heard about what 2011 will bring? If you look at what 2010 brought us, besides the iPad and Virgin Galactic bookings, it seems society can’t quite beat the old with the new. If you’ve indulged in Mad Men, had a drink at Shady Pines Saloon, or ever splurged a week’s rent for more old records, you’d have to agree. So in a tribute to our fascination with the past, and it’s infinite appeal, this year’s Sydney Festival is bringing back to us one of this city’s greatest dance clubs of the 30s and 40s – The Trocadero. Having closed down in the 70s, the Trocadero Dance Palace is once again opening its infamous doors and Kris Stewart joined Nell Greco in the studio to talk all about it.

Summary: Unlike the generation before, young artists today are often identifying as more than ‘just’ a painter or sculptor. As ideas of creativity and what can be ‘art’ become more fluid, it’s not uncommon to find video artists who are also potters, who work with breakdancers, or classical composers who rock out with punk bands. Joining this world of ‘slashies’ is young Sydney artist Anna John, who is a sculptor/musician/label manager and all-round cool girl.

It's an inflatable architecture, but it's part of the public lab at this year's Underbelly festival, so it's a work in progress - three of the artists, Tully Arnot, Charles Dennington and Xiaofu Wang joined Matt Levinson to discuss how it was going.

Summary: How often do you think about the fact that Australia’s currently at war? Allied troops have been fighting in the Middle East off and on for twenty years, but for most of us those distant deserts are little more than brief video footage of sandy landscapes that we absorb before the weather on the evening news. We’re bombarded with images of the area but we rarely engage with what they really mean in an enduring and thoughtful way. Phillip George who wants us to contemplate that strange contradiction.

Summary: Starting up an independent magazine is a big job. And these days it’s usually driven by a passionate interest in some niche area like, say, music, film, fashion or books, and to be honest, it’s more likely to wind up as a blog. But there’s a new magazine in town, and it’s a long one, full of culture, arts, music, fashion, poetry and stories. It’s called PAN Magazine, and Matt Levinson spoke to two of the ladies behind the project, Emma Dallas and Anastasia Freeman.

Who creates the exhibition and how do they know where to best display a work so its exhibited correctly? Claire Lewis is an assistant curator at the MCA who is about to open a group show at First Draft Gallery that she's curated herself and she joined Emma Swift on Canvas.

Summary: You know that scene in American Beauty where the neighbour slash love interest shows Thora Birch the video he's taken of a plastic bag wending and warping its way in the wind and he says it's the most beautiful thing he's ever seen? It's a moment people loved to poke fun at. But there's a lot to be said for finding beauty in the discarded, banal little fragments that everyday life is filled with, and Emma Swift was joined on the line by Vin Ryan, a Melbourne-based visual artist who's spent a great deal of time doing exactly that.

Title: Canvas feat Caz Haswell
Author: FBi 94.5 Sydney
Subtitle: Art & Ideas
Summary: Sometime in the past year or 3 we passed a milestone. Around the world, more of us are living in cities than aren't. And looking around this city, like many others, it's a scene of grey, black and mushroom coloured structures. In many ways, that landscape of architectural structures and shapes has fired the work of our next guest. Caz Haswell is a sculptor, although she works in two dimensions as well as the more common three. And in recent shows, her work has become a whole lot more organic.

Title: Canvas feat Pia Van Gelder
Author: FBi 94.5 Sydney
Subtitle: Art & Ideas
Summary: Years ago, I saw Aphex Twin play a show in Sydney. Kicking back on a lounge chair tapping the laptop in front of him, he seemed barely aware of the raucous scene of a crowd going crazy, several giant sized soft toys racing around the stage, and the overwhelming cacophony of his bleeps and beats. After the gig, people speculated he was playing computer games - he was so disengaged from the show. That plays into his 'whatever' kind of public profile, but it won't be all that foreign from anyone who goes to electronic gigs. But it wasn't always that way. And one artist working at something quite different is Pia Van Gelder.

Summary: Graffiti is illegal - there's no question about it - but seeing the work of Sydney street artists like Beastman, Phibs, Jumbo & Zap or Ears, it's instantly clear they're not just punks tagging walls for the sake of it. Their work adds colour, texture and life to the tapestry of our city, and one guy that recognises their contribution is artist, beatboxer and film-maker Luke Cavalan, otherwise known as LC Beats.

Summary: Pop up shops have been the buzz phenomenon this past year or so - and they're mostly an opportunity for labels to get rid of stock quickly, or a cheap outlet for new retailers. But a couple of sisters have taken the concept and seriously shifted it, making what they've called "a fantasy dress up box" that's inspired by some surprising stars. Summary: One of the biggest names at this year's Sydney Writers Festival is Lionel Shriver. In an almost 30-year writing career she's turned her sometimes cruel and always exacting eye to high school massacres, marital infidelity and her new novel, So Much For That dives into the meltdown that is the US Health Care system. Off the beaten track and into the wilderness somewhere, or out into that desert that's in the back of the mind of so many city-siders who've never actually seen it. This absurd little episode was derived from the ancient Greek myth of Sisyphus. Mel O'Callaghan spoke with Matt Levinson about her performance work that reinvents this myth.

Well I can guarantee it's nothing like Oculi, the book released by the photographers collective of that very same name. Not only are the images challenging, beautiful and sincere but it's a very large book, brimming with images that might make you consider getting a sturdier coffee table. He's a graphic novellist, author and lecturer in some pretty sexy areas of history - including gambling, noble crime & Venetian spies. His new book, 5 Wounds, is a dark and fantastic journey into the underbelly of a kind of alternate past Venice - it's equal parts macabre and darkly funny - and it looks beautiful to boot.

Summary: Titantic, The Dark Knight, Avatar - sure those big budget films make loads of cash at the boxoffice but aren't they a little passé? They lack the substance that audiences are now seeking in short films and the success of local events such as Tropfest (which was once a tiny festival screened on the back wall of a grungy cafe) are evidence of that. Author: FBi 94.5 Sydney
Subtitle: Art & Ideas
Summary: Do you know the feeling of learning a couple of words in another language? Even just saying 'hello' or 'thankyou' - there's an element of pride in being able to communicate with others in their language. Well, in a fair few parts of Australia, languages specific to the regions are extinct or heading that way fast - and with those languages are going stories about the land and the dreaming history of these regions, vast song cycles comparable to European culture's greatest works. What's to blame, well a whole lot of things, but Lucy Simpson is tackling this issue by reviving her country's language Yuwaalaraay (YOOLAROY) language, through her textile designs.

Summary: In the picture-perfect tropics north of Townsville, Palm Island is a beautiful place with a troubled history. For years it was used as a mission and highly controlled penal settlement. 10 years ago, the Guinness Book of Records called it 'The Most Violent Place on Earth Outside a Combat Zone' - although the Queensland Government and Palm Island Community Council dispute that. Ironically, the sport that's hoping to transform the community is a fighting one - boxing. Title: Canvas feat Mickie Quick
Author: FBi 94.5 Sydney
Subtitle: Art & Ideas
Summary: What do you think artists do these days? Painful long performances, minimalist paintings or disorienting assemblages of weird objects. Art is, on the whole, something so detached from daily life that artists think an essay will get it back into our lives. Mickie Quick is something quite different. He's a culture jammer, a street artist and a mainstream media producer. He's part of Squatspace, and the Network of Uncollectable Artists (NUCA), he was behind Channel Ten's Guerrilla Gardeners program, he runs the Big Fag Press printing house and a bunch of other projects. In many ways, his art is so connected to daily life that it hardly feels like art at all.

Title: Canvas feat Glenys Osborne
Author: FBi 94.5 Sydney
Subtitle: Art & Ideas
Summary: Picture this: the year is 1887. It's early in a small coastal town, and the sky's overcast, the morning eerily silent in the wake of a howling storm that shook the place through the night. Down at the beach shapes start washing onto the shore like whales beaching, slowly at first and then more quickly, until the small beach is covered and crowded with these log-like things - revealed, when looking closely, to be the bloated corpses of shipwreck victims - piles of their bodies lining the shore. That is the terrifying image that opens Glenys Osborne's first novel, Come Inside. And it's in the running for the 2010 Commonwealth Writers Prize. Matt Levinson spoke to Glenys Osborne on Canvas.

Signing lines stretch for miles and the harbour seems to glint with the shining thoughts of visiting and venerated authors taking the stage.
